After starting out as a tropical wave on September 13th, Maria ultimately intensified into a Cat 5 hurricane. On September 20th, Maria slammed into Yabucoa, in southern Puerto Rico. Her sustained winds of 155 mph ripped through the length of the island as never before. Scores of residents were killed, and the entire island’s power infrastructure was destroyed. In an effort to aid with emergency relief, the Sun Coast team airlifted fuel trucks to St. Croix, where they will then be ferried to Puerto Rico. Power and communications are still down for much of the island, and the Sun Coast team will remain in place for as long as needed to help with recovery efforts.
